Virginia Launches First-in-the-Nation Solar Program. Here's What Homeowners Need to Know.

If you've worked with me before, you probably know I'm passionate about solar energy. I've been saying for years that I'd love to see every suitable roof in Central Virginia covered in solar panels.

That's why I was excited to see Virginia become the first state in the nation to launch a statewide solar group purchasing program called Switch Together.

This new program is designed to make solar more affordable by combining homeowners into a large purchasing group. Instead of everyone shopping for solar individually, vetted installers compete for the group's business, helping drive down costs.

How Much Could Homeowners Save?

According to the program, the average homeowner could receive:

  • An average 23% discount on a solar installation, or roughly $6,300 off a typical system.

  • Estimated annual electricity savings of around $2,200.

  • A personalized assessment to determine whether solar is a good fit for their home.

  • Access to vetted installers that have been reviewed through the program.

Best of all, it's free to sign up and there's no obligation to purchase after receiving your assessment.

It's Not Just About Solar Panels

One feature that many people overlook is that the program also includes battery storage and heat pumps.

If your HVAC system is getting older or you've been thinking about adding backup power to your home, this is a great opportunity to explore those options while taking advantage of the program.

Why This Matters

As a Realtor, I spend a lot of time talking with homeowners about property values, interest rates, and market trends.

But one thing we don't talk about enough is the cost of owning a home after you buy it.

Lower utility bills can make homeownership more affordable month after month. Energy-efficient improvements can also make a home more attractive to future buyers who are looking for ways to reduce their ongoing expenses.

Every home is different, and solar isn't the right solution for everyone. That's exactly why I like this program. It gives homeowners professional guidance before they make any decisions.

Don't Wait Too Long

Enrollment for this round of the Switch Together program closes October 15.

If you've been curious about solar, battery storage, or replacing an aging HVAC system with a heat pump, I think it's worth taking a look.

If you have questions about how solar can affect your home's value, marketability, or whether your property might be a good candidate, I'd be happy to help. While I don't install solar or receive any compensation from this program, I love seeing homeowners save money while making Virginia a little greener.
